What Is Oud and How to Wear It

Few ingredients in perfumery command as much reverence as oud. Centuries old, deeply rooted in Middle Eastern and South Asian fragrance traditions, oud has become one of the most coveted and most misunderstood notes in the modern fragrance world. This guide demystifies it.

What Is Oud?

Oud (also known as agarwood or Aquilaria) is a resinous heartwood formed when certain tropical trees become infected with a particular mould. As the tree responds, it produces a rich, dark resin and it is this resin, distilled into an oil, that gives oud its extraordinary depth.

The result is a scent that is simultaneously smoky, woody, animalic, and sweet complex in a way that synthetic ingredients simply cannot replicate. It is no coincidence that pure oud oil is one of the most expensive raw materials in perfumery.

How Does Oud Smell?

Oud is difficult to define precisely because its character shifts depending on its origin and what it is blended with. In general, you can expect

  • Smokiness — a deep, almost incense-like quality
  • Woody warmth — grounding and rich, never sharp
  • Subtle sweetness — particularly when paired with resins, vanilla, or musks
  • Earthy depth — with faintly animalic, leathery undertones

How to Wear Oud

  • Prep your skin first; --Start with your favourite body moisturiser, then layer it with our Body oils and finish with your chosen EsQue Parfum
  • Apply to pulse points — wrists, the base of the throat, and behind the ears. Body heat amplifies oud's silage beautifully. (Personally I spritz a few drops around my collar bone and chest)
  • Start with one application — concentrated parfum oils are potent; a little goes a long way.
  • Layer thoughtfully — oud blends exceptionally well with rose, saffron, amber, and musk. Experiment with combining two EsQue oils to create something entirely your own.
